Public schools in Tasmania

Tasmanian government schools are run by the Department for Education, Children and Young People. Use the official intake-area map to find the local school, then enrol with the campus. This independent hub is not a government website.

This is an independent information guide. It is not a government website and is not affiliated with any state or territory education department, ACARA, or My School.

Official starting point: Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People. Use the department tool for addresses, catchment maps and current enrolment rules.

Tasmanian government schools are administered by the Department for Education, Children and Young People. If your child will live in Tasmania, the local school is defined by an intake area — the department’s word for a catchment. Families who live in that area are guaranteed a place at that primary or district school. This independent hub explains that structure. It is not a government website.

The intake-area map

The department publishes an intake-area map. Enter the home address after the map loads and read the school name it returns. That is the in-area school. School contact details sit in the schools directory, not always on the map itself.

The department encourages families to enrol at the local in-area school. That is not a slogan. It is how a small system keeps every campus viable and every local child placed.

Out-of-area enrolment, with a procedure

You may seek a government school that is not your local school if that school has capacity to take out-of-area students. The department publishes a list of schools that are at or near capacity, and it publishes an Out-of-Area Enrolment Procedure so those requests are assessed in a consistent way.

If a school has capacity, it can provide an expression-of-interest form. Schools then use that form and the evidence you supply to apply the procedure’s criteria. If there are more requests than leftover places, the same criteria are used to prioritise. This is slower than a local enrolment, and it is meant to be. Keep the in-area enrolment going so the child is not left waiting on a preference.

Do not treat a friendly conversation with a principal as a substitute for the form. The procedure exists so the next family is treated the same way.

Early years, district schools, and later years

Tasmania uses Kindergarten and Prep in the early years, then primary years through Year 6, with secondary from Year 7. District schools combine primary and secondary on one campus in some communities. Intake areas are still the starting rule for the primary years; secondary placement can involve different campus structures in a town that has both a district school and a separate high school. Ask the department or the school which map applies to the year level you need.

Tasmania does not run a NSW-style statewide selective-high-school system. Extension and specialist support happen inside comprehensive and district schools unless a campus publishes a specific program. See selective schools for how that compares with other jurisdictions.

Term dates, distance, and moving across Bass Strait

Term dates are published by the department. Individual schools may still communicate extra pupil-free days. Use the official calendar via this site’s school terms explanation.

Families moving from the mainland enrol from scratch. Bring the Tasmanian address, proof of the child’s age, and previous school information. A Victorian or Queensland year level does not automatically map onto a Tasmanian class without the school looking at the student.

Capacity lists change. A school that took out-of-area students last year may be on this year’s at-capacity list. Check the department list in the year you are applying, then use the procedure rather than a memory of a neighbour’s enrolment.

For national process, continue with enrolment, catchments and choosing a public school. For a profile of a named campus, use My School from ACARA after the intake map has done its job.

Regional Tasmania often means a district school is the local school for both primary and secondary years. That can be a practical advantage — one campus, one community — and it can also mean fewer subject lines in the later years than a large mainland high school. Neither fact is a ranking. Ask the school how Years 11 and 12 are offered, including any shared arrangements with another campus, before you treat an out-of-area city application as necessary.

If you are moving from Hobart to the north-west, or the reverse, run the intake map again. A former in-area school does not remain the local school after the address changes. Keep the new in-area enrolment moving while any out-of-area request is assessed.

Kindergarten in Tasmania is not a copy of NSW Kindergarten or Queensland kindergarten. Use the department’s names and age notes. If you are also arranging care around school hours, ask whether that care follows pupil-free days. Those operational details sit with the school and the care provider, not with the intake-area map, but they are part of whether a local enrolment will work for a household that has to keep working during term. The department service centre can help when a school is hard to reach; it cannot replace the in-area enrolment that the map has already named. Save the map result before you visit, and take it to the office with your enrolment documents so the in-area right is obvious.

Questions families ask first

How do I find my local Tasmanian government school?

Use the Department for Education, Children and Young People intake-area map. Enter the home address; the local primary or district school for that address is the school that must have a place.

Can I enrol out of area in Tasmania?

You may seek an out-of-area enrolment if the school has capacity. Schools use a published Out-of-Area Enrolment Procedure and may ask for an expression of interest and evidence. A local in-area enrolment remains the guaranteed path.

What are Kindergarten and Prep in Tasmania?

Kindergarten and Prep are the early years of Tasmanian schooling, with intake rules published by the department. Confirm current age and intake information on decyp.tas.gov.au rather than importing another state’s names.

Where are Tasmanian term dates published?

On the Department for Education, Children and Young People website. This hub does not reprint them.
